SUMMARY:TSO Chamber Soloists
DESCRIPTION:Founded in 2014\, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra Chamber Soloists came together with a mission to create programming featuring a diverse and varied range of instruments. Acclaimed as an ensemble of distinguished virtuosi\, the Chamber Soloists’ unique combination of winds\, strings\, keyboard\, and percussion gives it the flexibility to present a wide range of unusual and infrequently performed repertoire\, along with some of the best-loved works in the chamber music literature. \nThe Chamber Soloists have performed around the world\, from Roy Thomson Hall to the iconic Harpa Hall in Iceland\, with such distinguished guest artists as Emanuel Ax\, James Ehnes\, and Barbara Hannigan. They recently teamed with the Art Gallery of Ontario in The Decades Project\, a collaboration which pairs visual art with a musical composition from the 20th Century \nCurated by TSO Concertmaster Jonathan Crow\, the Chamber Soloists seek to bring audiences closer to the musicians of the Orchestra—personally and musically. Their lush program features works by Francaix (String Trio)\, Neilsen\, and Strauss\, concluding with Beethoven’s Septet in E flat Major\, Op. 20. \nSoloists joining Jonathan are Teng Li\, principal viola\, Joseph Johnson\, principal cello\, Jeffrey Beecher\, principal bass\, Miles Jaques\, clarinet\, Michael Sweeney\, principal bassoon\, and Neil Deland\, principal horn.

SUMMARY:New Orford String Quartet with Adrian Fung\, cello
DESCRIPTION:New Orford String Quartet – a great Canadian success story! Violinists Jonathan Crow and Andrew Wan are concertmasters of the Toronto and Montreal Symphony Orchestras\, Eric Nowlin\, principal viola at the Detroit Symphony\, and Brian Manker is principal cello with MSO. They formed in 2009\, following the footsteps of the original Orford Quartet\, Canada’s internationally admired ensemble. \nTheir concept – to bring four elite orchestral leaders together on a regular basis over many years to perform chamber music at the highest level – has resulted in a quartet that maintains a remarkably fresh and virtuosic perspective. While they tour major North American cities\, the players also feel strongly about bringing their performances to small rural towns\, and performing works by Canadian composers. \nThey will perform Hétu’s Scherzo\, for String Quartet\, Op. 54 and Brahms’ String Quartet in A minor\, Op. 51\, No. 2. With Adrian Fung\, cello they will perform Schubert’s final and beloved chamber work String Quintet in C Major\, D. 956\, Op. Posth. 163. \n“…unfailingly lean\, silvery beauty…showed a mastery that cooled Brahms’ anguish just a little and took some of the bluntness off the Beethoven.” Chicago Tribune \n“…nothing short of electrifying…These four string virtuosos animate every note with uncommon power and passion as well as elegance. Listen and weep.” The Star

SUMMARY:Noël Coward - A Talent to Amuse
DESCRIPTION:  \nFour exceptional Canadian opera singers accompanied by acclaimed classical musicians present a special cabaret of beloved 20th Century theatrical music. Soprano Monica Whicher\, mezzo Norine Burgess\, tenor\, Benjamin Butterfield\, and baritone Alexander Dobson grace the stage complemented by Toronto-based illuminati Barry Shiffman\, violin\, Adrian Fung\, cello\, and John Greer\, piano \nSir Noël Coward (1899-1973)\, known as “The Master” in British theatre\, was considered a genius of many talents: actor\, singer\, producer\, lyricist\, composer\, playwright\, and entrepreneur. Since 1969\, his vocal works have been celebrated in vibrant style under the banner of Sheridan Morley’s beloved biography A Talent to Amuse. \nFor many\, Coward’s songs remain fresh\, witty\, perceptive\, and touching. Our ensemble has selected some of the best\, especially arranged for operatic quartet including I’ll See You Again\, I’ll Follow My Secret Heart\, Mad Dogs and Englishmen\, and If Love Were All. \n “Benjamin Butterfield was first-rate\, a musically arresting presence…” San Francisco Chronicle \n “…a lambent-toned Burgess gave the performance of the evening with her whimsical\, touching interpretation…intimate in manner\, but gloriously full-voiced.” Globe and Mail \n“As always\, Mr. Shiffman brought his trademark sweetness of tone to the work\, and made it into a lyric poem.” Calgary Herald \nPLEASE NOTE: This special show runs for 90 minutes without intermission.

SUMMARY:Cecilia String Quartet - Celebrated Canadian Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:With a successful European tour followed by a 2016 Juno nomination for its highly acclaimed Mendelssohn recordings\, Cecilia String Quartet continues to win deserving praise. The Toronto-based\, internationally acclaimed quartet formed in 2004\, and is currently ensemble-in-residence at the U of T Faculty of Music. \nThe quartet has been hailed for “powerful” (Chicago Sun-Times) and “dauntingly perfect” (Berliner Zeitung) performances. Multiple prize-winners including Osaka (2008)\, Bordeaux and Banff (2010)\, past engagements have included performances at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw\, Berlin Konzerthaus\, London Wigmore Hall\, and venues in Italy\, Switzerland\, Belgium\, and Norway. \nThe ensemble will open our season with a Haydn Russian quartet\, Op. 33\, No. 1 in B minor plus the sublime Quartet in D Major\, Op. 44\, No. 1 by Mendelssohn\, and more. \n“The Cecilia capture the innocent quality…subtly reacting as Mendelssohn’s harmonic language darkens…they combine energy with finely pointed details. A terrific achievement.” Gramophone \n“We heard an almost unimaginable level of articulation\, communication\, timbres\, clarity of structure and\, again and again\, a deep musical rhetoric second to none.” Bremen Kreiszeitung

SUMMARY:Ensemble MidtVest - Canadian Debut
DESCRIPTION:Coming to us from Denmark – young\, ambitious\, dedicated\, and making their Canadian debut. Founded in 2002\, Ensemble MidtVest consists of a string quartet\, a wind quintet\, and a pianist! \nThe Ensemble is renowned for creative programming and pushing the boundaries of traditional classical concert form. These eleven players are European classically trained musicians\, all of whom specialize in chamber music. Together they form and reform into dynamic ensembles with the ability to play at highest levels a wide range of music. They made their Carnegie Hall debut in 2012. \nThey hold their own an annual chamber music festival at the manor Nørre Vosborg on the Danish West coast. \nTheir 2006 recording of piano quartets by Mozart and Brahms was awarded best chamber music CD by listeners of the Danish Broadcasting Company. The group has toured Italy\, Sweden\, Germany\, and Norway. \nSeven players of their ensemble will enthrall us with exquisite wind\, and wind & piano chamber works: Beethoven’s Wind Quintet in Eb Major\, Op. 4 (after Op. 103)\, arr. Rechtmann\, Poulenc’s Sonata for Flute and Piano\, FP164\, Nielsen’s Fantasy Pieces for oboe & piano\, Op. 2\, and more. \n“…you felt as though you’d been on a journey that transformed the material even as you revisited it…in conjunction with the ensemble’s eloquent pianist\, Martin Qvist Hansen\, the cellist\, Jonathan Slaatto\, dominated the sound…plucking at the very top of the fingerboard for a brilliantly muted\, curt effect…the group played with a modesty\, even a reticence\, that would\, periodically\, suddenly and beautifully explode.” – New York Times 2014 \nPurchase Single Tickets

SUMMARY:London Haydn Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Considered by many to be supreme\, England’s London Haydn Quartet was born out of a passion for the composer. Formed in 2001\, they strive to emulate pure 19th Century sound through their use of gut strings and classical bows. Adding to their uniqueness\, they collaborate regularly with clarinetist Eric Hoeprich with whom they recorded the Brahms and Mozart quintets on the Glossa label. As a quintet\, they have performed at the Concertgebouw\, the Library of Congress\, Yale University as well as appearances in Switzerland\, France\, Germany and Czech Republic. \nAmerican Eric Hoeprich has specialized in performing on historical clarinets. He has performed as a soloist with early music conductors such as Sir Roger Norrington and Christopher Hogwood. \n“The musicians imbued both works with myriad details of shading and contrast\, and beautifully calibrated phrasing.” – New York Times \n“Gut strings sometimes mean sour intonation\, but not with this superb British group…they explore…repertoire with a light touch and kaleidoscopic colours…crammed with subtle pleasures.” – CD Review\, The Times \nThey will perform three wondrous gems from the chamber music repertoire: Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet in A Major\, K. 581\, Op. 108\, Haydn’s String Quartet in Bb Major\, Op. 50\, No.1\, and Beethoven’s String Quartet in D Major\, Op. 18\, No. 3. \nPurchase Single Tickets

SUMMARY:Calmus Ensemble - European Vocal Quintet
DESCRIPTION:A perfect blend of sound\, precision\, lightness and wit\, the Calmus Ensemble has forged a refined sound which few a cappella groups achieve. These five Leipzig musicians have won a string of international prizes and competitions\, including the ECHO Klassik and Supersonic Award. In 2010\, they made their Carnegie Hall debut and their 2014 recording was named a top 10 CD by the New York Times. Naturally at home in the vocal music of the Renaissance\, Baroque and Romantic periods\, they also explore modern repertoire. \nWe’re thrilled to be a formative part of their 2015 recording project “Christmas Carols of the World”\, which will shine a spotlight on these timeless and classical creations. Some are sacred\, some are secular\, and some even humorous and entertaining – all woven in the theme of a popular holiday tradition. \nBe additionally dazzled by selected works from their 16 other CD’s. This is their Canadian debut. \n“Calmus Ensemble is stunning in its vocal variety\, mastery. The group held the audience…spellbound with its artistry.” “…in matters of pitch\, diction and musical shaping\, I’ve never heard finer ensemble singing.” – The Washington Post \nPurchase Single Tickets
