DESCRIPTION:Effective April 9th\, we are cancelling our May 24th concert plus the postponed concert of March 22nd. As this concludes our 2019-20 season\, we will be issuing refunds to subscribers/ticket holders for the missed concerts. \n\n\nVersatile violinist Andrew Wan is concertmaster of the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal and a member of the acclaimed New Orford String Quartet. As a soloist\, he has performed internationally under conductors such as Maxim Vengerov\, Vasily Petrenko\, appearing in recitals with the Juilliard String Quartet\, Daniil Trifonov\, and James Ehnes. His discography includes Grammy-nominated and JUNO Award-winning releases with the Seattle Chamber Music Society\, the Metropolis Ensemble\, and a live recording of Saint-Saëns three violin concertos with the OSM and Kent Nagano. \nSilver medalist and laureate of the Krystian Zimerman prize at the 2015 International Chopin Piano Competition\, Quebec’s Charles Richard-Hamelin stands out as an important pianist of his generation. He has appeared at prestigious festivals including La Roque d’Anthéron (France)\, Prague Spring\, “Chopin and his Europe” (Warsaw)\, and the Lanaudière. As a soloist\, he has performed with the main symphony orchestras of Canada as well as the Warsaw Philharmonic\, Sinfonia Varsovia\, Singapore and Korean Symphony Orchestras. His first solo recording of Chopin late works received critical acclaim from Diapason & BBC Music Magazine. \nThey will perform an all-Beethoven programme from their recent recordings of the complete violin sonatas: No. 4 in A minor\, Op. 23\, No. 10 in G Major\, Op. 96\, and No. 9 in A Major\, Op. 47 (Kreutzer).

Only very rarely does one experience such skillfully crafted and powerful harmonies… Great art.” In 2019\, the ensemble won the Classic Prague Award for Best Chamber Music Performance of the year. \nThe Czech-based group has performed at Wigmore Hall\, Musikverein\, Konzerthaus\, Théâtre des Champs-Elysées\, The Frick Collection\, Seoul Art Center\, and at significant festivals including Salzburg\, Lucerne\, Rheingau\, Kammermusikfest\, and Lockenhaus. \nThey have collaborated with esteemed artists such Jean-Yves Thibaudet\, Alexander Melnikov\, Vadim Gluzman\, and Jiří Bělohlávek/Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. DESCRIPTION:After winning gold medals at Royal College Manchester and Royal Academy in London\, Christian Blackshaw MBE was the first British pianist to study at the Leningrad Conservatoire. He later worked closely with Sir Clifford Curzon in London. \nHe has performed with leading orchestras including London Philharmonic\, Academy of St Martin in the Fields\, St Petersburg Philharmonic\, Moscow Philharmonic\, Mariinsky Orchestra\, New York Philharmonic\, San Francisco Symphony\, and Rotterdam Philharmonic. He has worked with illustrious conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle\, Valery Gergiev\, Gianandrea Noseda\, and Sir Neville Marriner. In May 2016 he completed his sold out debut recital tour in China\, including appearances at the National Centre for the Performing Arts\, Beijing and Shanghai Symphony Orchestra Hall. \nHis hugely acclaimed “Complete Mozart Sonata Series” at Wigmore Hall has been issued in 4 volumes\, with critics describing these “landmark” recordings as “captivating”\, “magical”\, and “masterful”. The last volume was named as one of the Best Classical Recordings of 2015 in the New York Times. \nChristian will bring this captivating magic to us with a scintillating Mozart-Schumann program including Sonatas No. 8 in B-flat Major\, K333 (Linz)\, No. 8 in A minor\, K310\, and Schumann’s Fantasie in C Major\, Op. 17. \n

Hosted by Joanna. \nRecipient of an Avery Fisher Career Grant and Lincoln Center Award for Emerging Artists\, violinist Paul Huang is already recognized for his intensely expressive music making and effortless virtuosity. Following his Kennedy Center debut\, The Washington Post proclaimed: “Huang is definitely an artist with the goods for a significant career.” \nHis upcoming engagements include debuts with the Houston\, Pacific\, and Seoul Philharmonia\, and returns with the Detroit\, Alabama\, Bilbao\, and National Symphonies of Mexico and Taiwan. He plays on the 1742 ex-Wieniawski Guarneri del Gesù on loan through the generous efforts of the Stradivari Society of Chicago. \nHelen Huang made her debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra at age eight\, and two years later with the New York Philharmonic (Kurt Masur). Born in Japan of Taiwanese parents\, she attended the Manhattan School of Music\, and then the Juilliard School\, where she studied with the Israeli pianist Yoheved Kaplinsky till 2004. \nShe has performed and toured with several major orchestras; Cleveland\, U.S. National\, Saint Louis\, the Leipzig Gewandhaus\, Vienna Chamber\, and the London Philharmonic. Helen has been a member of the Juilliard School faculty since 2008.

SUMMARY:Rebelheart Collective with Mai Tategami\, violin
DESCRIPTION:These highly accomplished Canadian players have formed their own group\, based in London ON\, with a unique and heartfelt vision – to give back to the community and help train the next generation of classical musicians. \nViolinist Erika Raum has appeared as guest artist with orchestras including the Budapest Radio Orchestra\, the Szombathely Symphony Orchestra\, the Austro-Hungarian Orchestra\, and the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra. Former violinist of the St. Lawrence String Quartet\, Scott St. John made his Carnegie debut in 1988 after winning first prize in the Alexander Schneider Competition. His solo appearances include the Boston Pops\, the Utah Symphony\, and Toronto Symphony. \nViolist Sharon Wei has won numerous prizes including top honours at the London Music Competition and the Washington International Competition. Sharon has appeared as soloist with orchestras throughout North America. Cellist Thomas Wiebe has performed as guest artist with the Juilliard Orchestra at Lincoln Center as well as the Winnipeg Symphony. He is a member of the Duke Trio. \nRebelheart’s members are Professors of Music at University of Toronto (Erika) and The University of Western Ontario. Scott is founder and artistic director of the new Western 360 Summer Music Festival August 10-13\, 2017 designed to encourage amateur musicians to grow their skills through working and experiencing the professionals. \nThey will perform Haydn’s String Quartet Op. 33\, No. 2 (The Joke)\, Dvorák’s String Quartet in F Major\, Op. 96 (American)\, and Mendelssohn’s String Quintet in B flat Major\, Op. 87 with Mai Tategami\, 2016 winner of the Orford Music competition. \nMai Tategami gave her solo debut under the conductor Yutaka Sado at the age of 14. In 2006 she was the youngest member of the Ongaku-juku orchestra\, founded by Seiji Ozawa. As a chamber musician\, she has performed at the Saito Kinen Festival Matsumoto and the Seiji Ozawa Chamber Music Academy. She is a first violinist at the Beethoven Orchester in Bonn and was an academician at the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin. \n
